FM rejects DoT's call to drop landline licence fee.

NEW DELHI: The finance ministry has shot down a telecom department proposal to expedite an end to licence fees for landline services. It is the latest instance where it has rebuffed or stalled a relief measure for telcos reeling under shrinking profits and valuations.

The proposal was to be implemented from January 2009, but is now unlikely to see the light of day after the finance ministry aired its objection in a note circulated on May 3, said Department of Telecom (DoT) officials. The finance ministry’s rejection is the fourth occasion that a move to aid the telecom sector was being stonewalled, they said. These measures together would have resulted in annual savings of more than Rs 5,000 crore to the telecom sector, beset by a brutish tariff war.
