BSNL-flouted-PMO-Pitroda-order

The BSNL overlooked the PMO’s directive and ordered for immediate purchase of 10 million GSM (mobile) lines from Ericsson worth Rs 4,000 crore without tender. This high-volume purchase was ordered soon after the Prime Minister’s Office directed the BSNL board to scrap the mega tender for the purchase of GSM lines and suggested a new model called Managed Service Model.

The PMO’s directive came on the recommendation of a committee headed by Prime Minister’s adviser Sam Pitroda and the findings of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC). Both Pitroda and the CVC suggested scrapping of the purchase. The Pitroda Committee includes DoT secretary PJ Thomas and HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh.
