Bangladeshi SIM cards being used

PTI | 07:07 PM,Jul 22,2012 Agartala, Jul 22 (PTI) With the Indo-Bangladesh border located just outside the city's municipal area, Indian traders here prefer to use Bangladeshi SIM cards for making phone calls to people in the neighbouring country at local rates. Officials say using an Indian SIM card is costly as BSNL treats calls to Bangladesh as international calls. BSNL's General Manager (Tripura) Deb Kumar Chakraborty said, "We block such calls using Time Advancement System because it is illegal to talk to anyone in a foreign country without the facility of international call in his or her phone." An exporter from India here said on condition of anonymity that traders often use Bangladeshi SIM cards sitting in the heart of Agartala though it is illegal. "Sit on the roof top of any tall building and speak to your business partner or friends and relatives. No problem, because the sound is clear. It is risky but it is difficult to identify," he said. The BSNL's official said the matter is under examination by security agencies of the central government. "If Bangladesh want they can stop it by using the same Time Advancement System like India," Chakraborty said. PTI JOY NIK KK

Mobile number portability a big bonus for BSNL

As many as 35,3416 mobile phone subscribers have migrated to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) from private operators as per mobile number portability (MNP) statistics in Kerala.
Kannur tops with 10, 9379 connections. MNP allows users to switch operators while retaining their mobile numbers. A private service provider which stood just behind BSNL had only 1.5 lakh subscribers, sources said.
“Till July 14 , 46, 3661 subscribers moved over to BSNL, while 11, 0245 connections were ported out,” says BSNL general manager A.S. Sukumaran. Kannur was followed by Ernakulam and Kottayam where 93,865 and 37,964 subscribers respectively, opted for the change. Alappuzha had the least with just 13,283 subscribers opting for the facility.
BSNL Kerala currently has over 70 lakh mobile phone subscribers.
“Though our staff had reservations when the programme was launched, the extent of subscribers opting for BSNL has made things look different now,” he said adding that coverage was also a vital factor.
MNP was implemented across the state on January 20, 2011 while the countrywide pilot launch of the service took place in Haryana in November 2010. To opt for MNP, a customer has to pay a maximum of Rs. 19 to the new operator for ‘porting’ the number and remain with the new operator for at least three months.
The customer has to send an SMS from the existing phone to 1900. A unique porting code is sent by the existing provider. An application has then to be filled with the new service provider mentioning the code for transferring the connection.

BSNL plans to share towers with Reliance 16 07 12 Financial express.

According to people close to the development, BSNL is in advanced stages of negotiations with RIL for sharing around 24,000 of its towers. RIL’s Infotel Broadband is expected to launch its 4G services (broadband wireless access or BWA) by the end of this year and needs towers for the same. The deal with BSNL would signal its first major step towards the impending launch.
Sources said BSNL is offering around 22% discount over the prevailing market rentals for towers. The market rentals are in the range of R15,000-18,000 per month whereas it is offering its towers to RIL for around Rs 12,000 per month. Compared with the rentals charged by the PSU from other operators using its towers, the discount for RIL could be around 50%.

Mobile-tariffs-set-to-rise-on-trai-recommendations

In a meeting with consumer groups today, TRAI Chairman Rahul Khullar said, "It is not 1 paisa or 2 paise (increase) ... but also not 16 paise or 25 paise as projected by operators."

The minimum price of airwaves proposed by TRAI for pan-Indian operations is over Rs 18,000 crore, around 10 times more than the amount paid by old operators.

It has also recommended to fix double of this amount as minimum price for the airwaves that existing telecom operators use to provide wireless services at the time of renewal of their licences.

Telecom operators have said that new prices recommended by TRAI will lead to increase in existing tariff by up to 100 per cent.

BSNL more professional-Economic Times

CHENNAI: The government is drawing up plans to make loss-making BSNL more professional, Minister of State for IT and Telecommunications Sachin Pilot said today.

"Yes...think few (telecom) circles have shown some reversal in loss making. We still have lot of hard work ahead of us. We are drawing up plans on how to use our assets, to get more partnerships and to get joint ventures and (come into) revenue streams," he told reporters here.

Observing that the "landline" (fixed line) business was not generating enough profits, he said, "(besides that) we have a huge employee base and the Sixth Pay Commission burden is also on the department (of Telecom) and BSNL."

"We are looking at ways to mitigate the losses at the same time and turn the company (BSNL) more professional," he said.

State-run BSNL's losses had more than tripled to about Rs Rs 5,997 crore during 2010-11, mainly due to hefty outgo for employees' salary and expenses borne by the PSU for procuring 3G and BWA spectrum.

The company had registered a net loss of Rs 1,823 crore during 2009-10.

According to the unaudited results of the company, the loss for 2010-11 is Rs 5,997 crore.

This resulted in loss of other income of close to Rs 4,000 crore during the year gone by. BSNL had demanded refund of this money but denied by the Finance Ministry

Call centre in west bengal 01 07 12

Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) will set up a call centre in West Bengal specially for registration of complaints by its landline and broadband users.
At present, complaints by subscribers have to be made at exchanges, resulting in delay in solving the issue.
“BSNL has geared up to streamline and resolve complaints issues with a new call centre specifically for landline and broadband subscribers,” BSNL (Calcutta Telephones) CGM Mr Somnath Maity told PTI here.
“By end of July, we will have one call centre for entire West Bengal for landline and broadband subscribers. Similarly, call centres for other states will also come up,” he said.
After the call centre for fixed access connection is set up BSNL subscribers in Calcutta and Bengal circles would be able to access the centralised call centre to address their problems.
BSNL has dedicated call centres for mobile connections.
“The centralised call centre can sort out problems of any subscriber irrespective of circle he belongs to in Bengal,” Mr Maity said.
