The first terrestrial cable link between India and China is to be flagged off soon. China Telecom Corporation Ltd, that country’s largest fixed-line operator and third largest mobile telecommunication provider, setting its sights on India’s telecom operators and its growing mobile subscriber base. This despite growing concern over security issues involving Chinese firms.
Late last year, the Chinese firm had inked a pact with three Indian telecom firms for an undersea cable network. Buoyed by this, and in a bid to ensure uninterrupted traffic, China Telecom is keen to team up with Indian operators once again, this time on an overland link. The alternative route to the existing submarine cable will ensure uninterrupted, direct terrestrial connectivity between the two most populous nations.
“Traffic on undersea cables has been disrupted time and again due to typhoons and earthquakes. The move will tremendously benefit enterprise customers in both countries,” said a Mumbai-based telecom analyst with a financial institution, requesting anonymity. Saying that an undersea cable link from India to China via Hong Kong costs around $300 million, he added: “The cable over land would cost around a 10th of that.”
