The unease within Congress over the Centre’s economic policies manifested on Tuesday when its trade union wing, Intuc, joined a general strike and charged the government with “pro-investor bias.”
As workers in various sectors, including coal, power, defence, insurance, banks and oil refineries struck work, Intuc president Sanjeeva Reddy described the agitation as a “grand success”. Defying the party leadership’s appeal to reconsider its decision to join the anti-government protest action, Intuc, for the first time joined a united action by trade unions.
