BANGALORE: Absenteeism and the culture of French leaves is a common problem at government offices in the country. However, an employee of Bangalore Telecom District of BSNL has taken only five days’ leave in his 31-year-long career besides his weekly offs.Prem Kumar (51), has taken no paid leave or casual leave since he joined the department in October 1979.
A senior officer confirmed Kumar’s immaculate attendance record.Kumar had joined BSNL as a canteen bearer. He was promoted as a counter clerk on December 1989. Since 1997, he has been working as the caretaker at the office. “When I had joined BSNL, I used to listen to this programme [on radio] wherein they used to interview people who have served their respective organisation for about three years without taking a leave. So I thought I have to do more than that,” he told Express. He said the only time he could not come to work was when he had met an accident and broken his teeth, in 1997. “Though I was willing to get back to work, the doctor told me that I needed to take rest at least for a week,” he said.He added that once his father had to undergo an operation at Hosmat Hospital and was admitted there for about a week.
Kumar said at night he used to stay with his father at the hospital and the next day he used to work as usual. In fact, Kumar did not take leave even for his marriage. He said his wedding was on Good Friday, a government holiday, and the office remains closed on weekend. “So on Monday I was back to office.”Ask him about his dedication towards work and he says, “Unnecessarily I do not want to take leave.
Till the time my health permits, I will try to keep up with the pace.”Officials at the office he serves in say Kumar is an asset to the company. He was awarded the Sanchar Shree award for the year 2005-06.
