BSNL official arrested for taking Rs10000 bribe
SURAT: A senior official of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) was arrested on Wednesday accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 through his driver. Both the accused were arrested at the BSNL headquarters in the city.
The accused, S Kumar, sub-divisional engineer (phones), external, is posted at Mahidharpura BSNL office and was authorised to clear bills put up by broadband connection contractors. Tejas Valji Vasava, a contractor, approached anti-corruption bureau (ACB) with a complaint that Kumar was asking for a bribe of Rs 10,000 to clear his bills.
Following the complaint, ACB planned a trap on Wednesday afternoon. Kumar called Vasava at the BSNL head office at Karimabad on Ghod Dod Road with Rs 10,000. Vasava reached the Karimabad office with the money and on contacting Kumar he was asked to give the money to his driver Jagdish Patel.
As per instruction, Vasava paid the money to Patel and soon ACB officials arrested Patel and Kumar for accepting the bribe. Vasava in his complaint informed police that he was not ready to pay the bribe and avoided Kumar for two months, but Kumar had begun pressurising him to pay the money since two months.
