BSNL to defer payments 3G to government.

State run telecom service provider, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is undergoing restructuring process and the government is considering allowing it to defer the payment for its 3G spectrum as well as broadband wireless spectrum to stabilize its financial position. The government is also looking into a possibility of a refund to the company.
If allowed BSNL will have comfortable 24 months period to pay the amount to the government. The telecom operator is yet to hold formal discussions but some report suggests that it has approached the communications ministry on an informal level.
The private operators on the other hand will have only 10 days to pay the bid amount and are likely to appose any move from the government that will give unfair advantage to state-run company.
The auction rules state that BSNL will have to pay the amount equal to the highest bidder which may translate into $2-3 billion. The base for the auctions has been set at Rs 3,500 crore and for broadband spectrum its Rs 1,750 crore.
