KOLKATA: State-owned telecom firm BSNL did not generate any bill against the broadband connection to a private company for five years despite several reminders. Then came the shocker the first bill finally landed this January with dues of Rs 4.3 lakh. This is one of several cases to flood BSNL's special relief cell Samadhan introduced to resolve billing disputes.
Rajani Mukherjee, one of the directors of BBD Bag-based Narendra & Narendra Engineers Pvt Ltd, recalls being one of the early applicants for the broadband service when BSNL launched a pilot service in November 2004. When the service was commercially launched two months later, the firm made a security deposit of Rs 6,000 and opted for the Business 1,200 plan that comprised a committed monthly rental of Rs 1,200.
When the bill did not arrive after a couple of months, the company contacted CalTel and was told not to worry. It gave several reminders subsequently but the bill remained elusive.
