For a generation that gets annoyed if an e-mail page takes longer than two seconds to open, it might be a shock to go back in time and see how things were nearly two decades ago. Forget computers and Internet connectivity — even getting phones was a problem and we aren't talking about mobiles, by the way. Just plain and simple land lines — those black instruments with a round dial — were a precious gift that the government bestowed on you. For, there were long waiting queues. In fact, the Eighth Five-Year Plan document (1992-97) of the Government of India hoped to bring down the waiting list for telephones to two years — and that too, by the year 2000!
